August looks good

After a prolonged fine spell which gave us the opportunity to ski throughout our heli area the verdict is out! Great snow cover, good stability and with the current storm about to initiate the re set button we should be looking good with fine weather forecast for the first week in August!

Great Snow Cover!

The big storm in early July deposited over 3 meters of new snow thoughout our heliski terrain. Today we enjoyed new snow and good stability and with a large anticyclone over New Zealand it looks like we are  in for a great week of skiing and riding.

Trained Guides

Every season we run a comprehensive training for all our guides. While our guides are all qualified through the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association and are internationally recognised by the IFMGA it is still necessary to get together to share new knowledge and refresh  operational procedures. This year we had 18 keen guides at a training that focused on avalanche safety, lst aid response, guest satisfaction and rescue procedures.

We are ready to go but the forecast for this week is not good however it will produce significant snowfalls in our mountains with lesser amounts at the ski resorts. We have had a slow start to this winter and opened on limited snow conditions but this will all change next week. The other good thing is that we don’t have any early season weak layers so the forecast snow should bond well and produce a good snowpack. My pick is the week starting July 11th but then again whatwould I know it’s only my 25th season at Methven Heli!
